Many People Want to Help

Know this – there are many people who want to help make sure that your child has a fun and fulfilling summer, and will do whatever it takes to make it happen.

Some People Will Stand in Your Way

At the same time however, you may encounter some people who for whatever reason, fear of the unknown, fear of change, inertia, ignorance or for many other reasons, do not want to include your child, or other children with special needs, in their regular programs.

The ADA Protects People With Disabilities

In  most situations, you have the law on your side, with The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).  While the ADA and the US Department of Justice offer protections for people with disabilities, the better first road to take is to find people in the community who can help you.

Be Persistent – Don’t Give Up!

Nothing is more important than your persistence.  Everyone is busy, and each individual has different priorities.  Your persistence will help make your child a higher priority.   If you feel that you personally do not have the strength to do it, find a friend or family member who can help you.

Use All Available Resources

Your school, and local community service organizations like the ARC and the UJA, may be able to help provide you and your center with guidance, training and professional support on inclusion.    Teachers, behaviorists and other professionals may be available to provide on-site assistance.

Contact Board Members, Trustees and Founders

Board members, trustees and founders of your center can help you if you encounter difficulties in getting your child included.  Do not be shy about calling them.  You can get their names, and possibly their telephone numbers, from the center, from an annual report, or look around your center for the largest commemorative plaques – those may be important donors who have a lot of influence.

Gain Strength From Challenges and Seek Help From Others

While no one will be a stronger advocate than you, if you ask around, and seek out the right people, you will find that there are many caring individuals who want to help you and your children.  Do not give up - try to gain strength from the challenges you face – your children deserve it.
