The
complete resource to help parents and professionals include ALL kids in summer camp
Last winter XXXXXX spoke
with many of you on the importance of creating a more fully inclusive
environment for kids and families throughout the JCC. She asked you what resources
the special needs department would need to provide in order to assure not only
the safety and appropriateness of the participants, but also comfort and security for the instructors.
The staff interviewed responded
with the following requests:
* Knowledge of the child’s
special needs and behaviors prior to the initial class time.
* The provision of a one on one
aid by the special needs department, if necessary.
* The Special Needs Department will offer support through information sharing and physical presence of the special needs coordinator or other
qualified member of the special needs department during class time.
* The Special Needs Department
will provide ongoing support to instructors.
The JCC has been successfully
offering inclusion throughout our camp programs for a long time. Many of our
school year programs have also begun to accept children with special needs. In
order to stay current with educational and recreational trends, we must
continue to not only provide inclusion services at the highest quality, but
also increase the number of children with special needs we serve through our
skill based and inclusion programs.
I am encouraging parents of
children with special needs to register for fall classes that are appealing. I
am telling the parents to notify both the department head and myself when they
have registered so that we can be sure that the situation will be appropriate
and necessary accommodations can be made. When parents contact you let me know
so that we can coordinate information and ensure that the class is going to be
appropriate.
I am happy to address any
concerns or suggestions you may have. Please feel free to contact me!
