ü                  Enhance your attitude by:

·        Using professional practices

·        Developing awareness of personal attitudes

·        Becoming familiar through direct contact

·        Recognizing the power of stigmas, stereotypes, segregation, labels

 

ü                  Adopt inclusive beliefs that help improve attitudes:

·        Focus on similarities

·        View all people as part of a community/program

·        Facilitate equal status

·        Encourage age-appropriate behaviors

 

ü                  Encourage integration:

·        Encourage social interaction & friendships

·        Design activities that are inclusive

·        Be a role-model

 

ü                  Watch your language:

·        Use “people first” language

·        Communicate dignity & respect for each individual

·        Identify your campers as “people” or “program participants,” not “clients”

 

ü                  Include people with disabilities & their families in planning.

·        Work with participants, their families, and staff on ways to modify activities and programs to fit the individuals needs
